WINNIPEG. x–09s. During the First and Second World Wars thousands of Indigenous people enlisted in the Canadian military, but did not get the same benefits as their non-Indigenous comrades when they returned home. In 1993, Indigenous veteran Randi Gage organized an event in Winnipeg to recognize and honour their service. She says it initially faced racism and pushback, but today people across the country will gather for the 25th National Aboriginal Veterans Day. (“..people talking.”) (SOURCE:The Canadian Press)

TAG: She says it’s important people are aware that Indigenous veterans couldn’t vote, were unable to get their benefits, and in some cases their land was given to non-Indigenous veterans.
