Report On OPP Actions At 2006 Caledonia Incident Completed
CALEDONIA, ON, May 23 – An Ottawa Police Service investigation into the actions of Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers in Caledonia in June 2006 is completed. Thirteen involved officers were accused of not acting appropriately when violence erupted near a shopping area in Caledonia. The investigative report requested by the OPP has determined that allegations against members of the OPP are unsubstantiated.
Immediately following the June 9, 2006 incident OPP investigators initiated a criminal investigation that resulted in eight individuals being charged with a total of 14 Criminal Code offences.
OPP Commissioner Fantino is aware of the report and has ensured that involved OPP members are notified. “Our officers handled themselves appropriately,” Fantino said. “These officers maintained control of a difficult, volatile situation and minimized escalation. The investigation that resulted speaks for itself; we identified and charged those responsible. The OPP will continue to preserve the peace and bring to justice those who break the law.”
