The OHRC supports the recommendations of the report released yesterday by the Honourable Frank Iacobucci.

As we said in our report on Police use of Force and Mental Health, “the challenge will be to put recommendations into action – and the time to do that is now.”

We also commend Chief Blair for his comment during yesterday’s press conference that “this is not a report that will gather dust. This is a report that will gather momentum.”

Many of the recommendations are in line with our report on Police use of Force and Mental Health released in February and with approaches that we have suggested in our Policy on preventing discrimination based on mental health disabilities and addictions released in June.

Mr. Iacobucci spoke in his report of working to create a “blueprint” for the Toronto Police Service. We know there is a great deal of work to be done in this area. We have worked closely with the TPS and TPSB in the past, and we stand ready to do so again.
