The Artist in Focus: Ruth Cuthand exhibit at the Remai Modern shows a snapshot into different points during her artistic career.
April 4, 2019
Ruth Cuthand has been using her art to talk about Indigenous women in Canada since the 1980s, and she unfortunately hasn’t been given reason to stop yet.
“I’m still really frustrated with the fact that Indigenous people live in really, really dire conditions, and nobody cares,” she said.
The Artist in Focus: Ruth Cuthand exhibit at the Remai Modern only shows a small portion of Cuthand’s work over the past few decades, but it also shows a snapshot into different points during her artistic career. Throughout the different styles Cuthand has worked with, there are a few consistencies in her work: a diligent attention to highlighting the struggles of Indigenous Canadians and a juxtaposition of artistic mediums with her subject matter.
