Sask. First Nations support hunger striker – StarPhoenix

Saskatchewan First Nations people and chiefs are converging on Ottawa this week to support an Ontario chief ‘s hunger strike.

Attawapiskat First Nation Chief Theresa Spence has been on a water-only diet in Ottawa for eleven days to protest the federal government’s policies and treatment of First Nations people.

Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) vice-chief Simon Bird delivered a star blanket from the Cote First Nation to Spence Tuesday. Bird also took her sweetgrass, tobacco and prayer cloths on behalf of the Sakimay First Nation.

“We want to support what she’s doing, and draw attention to the need for practical supports for First Nations people,” Bird said in an interview from Ottawa on Tuesday.
