Saskatchewan Congratulates The Métis Nation – Saskatchewan On Fair And Democratic Election
June 28, 2007
The unofficial results are in and the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan (MNS) has newly elected leaders.
Robert Doucette was chosen president-elect to lead the executive for the next five years.
“Congratulations to all involved,” First Nations and Métis Relations Minister Maynard Sonntag said. “I am pleased that we can now begin the work of restoring relations between the Government of Saskatchewan and the MNS.”The 2007 MNS election took place following the efforts and help of a number of people and groups including the provincial and federal governments; the Métis Electoral Consultation Panel, appointed by the Province; the Independent Oversight Committee, appointed by the Governments of Saskatchewan and Canada; and a Chief Electoral Officer.
“Without their efforts we would not have been able to get to where we are today,” Sonntag said. “It has been a sometimes difficult and long process, however that’s all behind us now, and we can all look forward to the future. This is truly a good day for Saskatchewan Métis and all Saskatchewan people.”
Both the Provincial and Federal governments worked together and shared the costs of funding the election. The Provincial Government will begin discussions with the MNS to determine how to restore relations. More details on the MNS election can be found at www.metiselectionsk.ca.
The Provincial Government is looking forward to confirmation of the election results from the Chief Electoral Officer in the official election report.
