The Saskatoon Tribal Council is pleased to announce that it will host a housing conference May 23-24, 2007 at TCU Place in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The recent federal budget includes $300 million and the Saskatchewan budget $100 million in new funding for housing. This funding requires the preparation of business plans and one of the goals of this conference is to assist First Nations in the preparation of proposals that will meet all criteria.Successful models in Saskatchewan, such as the Lac La Ronge home ownership program, Habitat for Humanity and other Private Public Partnerships (P3) will be featured.

We will also explore the links between housing and economic development. First Nation suppliers such as ready-to-move home companies AC Realty and South Beach Homes have been invited to present.

“Migration to urban centres has accelerated in recent years and there has been no increase in housing stocks for ten years. Innovative new approaches will be explored to address this issue at this event. Our objective is to double housing stock,” said FSIN Vice Chief Morley Watson.

Tribal Chief Joe Quewezance of the Saskatoon Tribal Council states, “Maintaining and improving the health of First Nations and improving their quality of life is directly related to sustainable housing strategies.”

Internationally acclaimed Indian architect, Douglas Cardinal will deliver a keynote address, “Designing Communities That Work”, at a reception on the evening of May 23.

The Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada has been invited to speak.
