Site 41 Win Highlights Need For Action On Water At The Provincial And Federal Level
For Immediate Release
September 22, 2009
The Council of Canadians applauds the victory today at Simcoe County council where councillors voted overwhelmingly in favour of a permanent closure of the planned Site 41 landfill. The national organization is now calling on the provincial and federal government to help the community to protect water and address waste management concerns. The county council voted 93-13 “to cease construction and all further development of Site 41”.
This win is the result of sustained public pressure, from the local community, farmers, First Nations groups, the Council of Canadians, and organizations from across Canada.
“It is a significant victory after a 26-year struggle,” says Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow, “but the Council of Canadians and others will continue to monitor the situation to prevent any potential sale of the land to a private developer.”
An amendment to the motion directing county council to revoke the certificate of approval, which allows for a landfill at Site 41, was defeated.
“The province of Ontario must support this decision by working with the county to develop waste diversion strategies and to fully protect water in Simcoe County,” adds Barlow.
“Simcoe County will be an example to communities across Canada who are facing similar issues and concerns,” says national water campaigner Meera Karunananthan. “The protection of water from landfills and waste disposal should be an essential component of a national water policy.”
