SKIDEGATE – Qay’llnagaay Heritage Centre Society will receive a $5,000 BC150 Community Arts Grant for the Grand Opening of the Qayllnagaay Heritage Centre, Tourism, Sport and the Arts Minister Stan Hagen announced today.“The BC150 Community Arts Grants are bringing B.C.’s rich history to life by funding exciting new art projects,” said Hagen. “These projects will leave a legacy of arts and culture for future audiences to enjoy and connect BC150 celebrations in every corner of the province.”
The BC150 Community Arts Grant program complements BC150 festivities taking place around the province, which are based on five key pillars: heritage, communities, Aboriginal people, cultural diversity, and arts and culture.
In celebration of the grand opening of the Haida Heritage Centre at Qay’llnagaay, the society is hosting three days of events highlighting the rich artistic culture of the Haida people. The three days will see the raising of two totem poles, the launching of three newly carved canoes and two community feasts, with song and dance performances throughout.
BC150 Community Arts Grants fund projects spanning a variety of disciplines, including visual art exhibitions, dance, musical or theatre productions, publication projects, and media arts projects. The grants provide a maximum of $10,000 and up to 75 per cent of total project costs and are administered through the Assembly of BC Arts Councils.
This year, B.C. is celebrating BC150, the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia in 1858. Every community in B.C. is invited to participate in this year-long celebration of the province’s cultural diversity, community strength and widespread achievement.
