Smiths Falls pow wow brings Indigenous pride to shores of Rideau River – Inside Ottawa Valley

The Spirit of the Drum Pow Wow took over Duck Island in the middle of the Rideau River in Smiths Falls this past weekend.

From June 9 to 10, Indigenous drums could be heard across the waters, voices raised in unison, as dancers danced on the grass, their bright costumes bright in the summer sun.

Along with vendors selling Indigenous goods, there were also booths set up from Canadore College and Queen’s University extolling First Nations educational opportunities, and teepees at the far end of the island — as well as a long, sad trail of red clothing, like red dresses, a trail of tears of sorts, bearing witness to just some of Canada’s missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, bringing faces and names to the ongoing scandal.
