Social Work National Conference in Toronto
May 22-25, 2008 marks the dates of the first joint Social Work National Conference: Human Rights in a Diverse Community.

TORONTO, ONTARIO, SOCIAL WORK NATIONAL CONFERENCE–(May 22, 2008) – This conference represents a partnership between the Canadian Association of Social Workers and the Canadian Association for Social Work Education and is hosted by the Ontario Association of Social Workers. The conference brings together front-line practitioners and employers from across health and social services, educators, researchers, students and policy-makers.Held in Toronto, one of the most multicultural cities in the world, the conference will explore a wide range of human rights concerns that are endemic to our rapidly changing society in which resources are often limited; the span between the rich and the poor is expanding; and the pressure to balance the rights of the individual with those of the community poses increasing challenges.
Preserving human rights is a cornerstone of social work practice that has given special attention to the needs of marginalized and minority groups. This conference will bring social workers together from across Canada, the United States and other countries to discuss the role that social workers play in addressing current and emerging issues that impact on our diverse communities.
Major presenters at the conference include:
Marc Kielburger, Thursday, May 22nd , 7:30 p.m., co-founder of Free the Children (won four Nobel Peace Prize nominations) & Leaders Today, and co-author with his brother Craig, of the New York Times best-seller, Me to We: Finding Meaning in the Material World.
Martha Kuwee Kumsa, Friday, May 23rd , 8:30 a.m., former Ethiopian dissident journalist freed by PEN and Amnesty International and highly recognized social work academic speaking on the local impact of globalization.
Cindy Blackstock, Saturday, May 24th, 8:15 a.m., a rising, award-winning national leader for the rights of First Nations children and families speaking on social work’s Code of Ethics with respect to Aboriginal people’s experiences in child welfare.
Margaret Trudeau, Saturday, May 24th, 7:00 p.m., prominent Canadian and mental health advocate, will be speaking about her experience with the social stigma associated with mental illness that cuts across all segments of society.
Ariane Brunet, Sunday, May 25th, 8:15 a.m., a lawyer with United Nations status, and international women’s rights activist, will address issues of brutalization of women and girls in war-torn countries.
