Spectra Energy Transmission Proudly Celebrates 50th Anniversary
TAYLOR, BRITISH COLUMBIA–(Oct. 10, 2007) – Spectra Energy Corp. (NYSE:SE) –
On October 8, 1957, Westcoast Transmission officially opened its pipeline in a symbolic valve-turning event with visionary Frank McMahon and B.C. Premier W.A.C. Bennett. This event marked the beginning of Canada’s first “big-inch” pipeline and the flow of cleaner-burning natural gas from northeastern B.C. to the Lower Mainland and U.S. markets in the Pacific Northwest. What was truly a “pipe dream” for Westcoast’s founder has grown into a critical part of the North American energy infrastructure network. Through its 50 year history, Westcoast Transmission became Duke Energy and is now Spectra Energy Transmission (SET).Today, SET executives along with employees, retirees, customers, local government and Aboriginal representatives, and community members are joining together for a special re-enactment ceremony to honour its first 50 years and look forward to its growth over the next 50 years.
“We’re proud of our roots here in Taylor and our growth across western Canada. As we reflect on the past half century, we also look forward to our future. Our business is built on cleaner-burning natural gas. We will always take care to operate safely, reliably, reduce emissions and protect the environment. We will also maintain our focus on strong stakeholder relationships with communities and First Nations across our operating areas,” said Doug Haughey, President, Spectra Energy Transmission West.
“Over the years we’ve been a proud partner in the communities where we live and work and this will continue to be an important focus for us. Last year, our community investment program contributed approximately $1.5 million to local communities across our western Canadian operations and our more than 1,000 employees volunteered almost 4,000 hours of their time to support local organizations right in their own neighborhoods,” Haughey continued.
In addition to Spectra Energy’s ongoing philanthropy program, in honour of it’s 50th anniversary, the company also provided the communities in northeastern B.C. with a $200,000 donation to STARS (Alberta Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society) for their air ambulance programs and services which cover the region through a new base of operations in Grande Prairie. SET also created the Westcoast Investments in Safety and Environment, or WISE, grant program. Fifty organizations were each awarded a $1,000 grant in support of their local project which focus on improving safety or the environment. Additionally, the company created Spectra Energy Transmission’s 50th Anniversary Bursaries program for Aboriginal students at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). Ten, $2,500 bursaries have been awarded to support the educational pursuits of hard-working UNBC students. Finally, the company sponsored Science World’s Science World On the Road outreach program which engaged K-7 students and teachers in an innovative science program throughout a number of B.C. communities where the company operates.
