Squamish Nation Turns to Insight for Land Management Solution
The Squamish Land Management System provides a secure unified access point designed to aggregate and personalize land-based information, including geospatial map data, for the users.
VANCOUVER, Canada — As a result of historical court cases (e.g., Haida Nation and Tsilqot’in), the Provincial and Federal Crown have a legal duty to consult with First Nations whose Aboriginal rights may be infringed upon by development projects in their traditional territory.
First Nations who receive requests to participate in these consultations related to their territories and natural resources need a tool that sets out a step-by-step process to ensure that governments fulfill their duty to consult and accommodate.
In January 2013 the Squamish Nation (http://www.squamish.net/) took action to implement a solution that would help them deal with the increasing number of referrals being received. The Squamish Nation recognized the value in establishing a centralized, online repository for storing and tracking all applications and agreements related to their traditional lands – enter Insight (http://cloverpoint.com/insight/)™ the foundation of the Squamish Nation Land Management System. Some of the many benefits and uses of Insight for the Squamish Nation include:
A single, secure point of access for all information related to the Squamish traditional territory
The provision of information sharing, broadly or as selectively as is necessary
Ensures that land-based information is accessible to those who need it
Provision of land-based data in a secure environment
Ensures referrals, and associated documents, are managed from a common and shared system
The ability to monitor any accommodations related to referrals
Enable the management of lease agreements, temporary permits, and even store details about tax assessments
A single, secure repository to holistically manage all lands within the Squamish Nation traditional territory
The Squamish Land Management System provides a secure unified access point, in the form of a web-based user interface, and is designed to aggregate and personalize information, including geospatial map data, for the users. This system is poised to grow as the capacity and information available to the Squamish Nation grows.
