State of emergency declared for WFN lands – Kelowna Daily Courier

The Westbank First Nation has declared a state of emergency due to flooding on its two reserves.

The declaration allows the band to order evacuations, enter buildings on band land without a warrant to respond to the emergency and to remove “trees, structures or crops” to alleviate the effects of the flooding.

The declaration also authorizes the band to acquire or use any land or personal property needed to respond to the disaster and to order people to assist in the response, if they are able.

Travel may be restricted on the reserve.

Under the declaration, the band transfers its emergency powers to the Central Okanagan Emergency Operations Centre, which will consult with the chief and council.
