Statement by John Tory on the National Day of Action

QUEEN’S PARK, June 29 – Progressive Conservative Party Leader John Tory today issued the following statement regarding today’s National Day of Action.

“Today’s National Day of Action is intended to draw attention to some very real and concerning issues within First Nations communities. Quality of life, land claim and other issues have been around for too long and it is critical all governments do more to address the concerns the First Nations leadership have rightly raised. The leaders have properly called for a day of peaceful protests. “Unfortunately, there are individuals who are impeding the constructive purpose of today by engaging in lawless activities that could interfere with the rights of others and could hurt our economy. This is wrong and we need strong leadership to stand up and say we will not stand idly by when the law is being broken – anywhere at any time, no matter who is involved and how legitimate the particular grievances are.

“We’re celebrating Canada Day this weekend and everything that we cherish about our country. One of the core principles our country is built on is the rule of law and the consistent application of that law to everyone.

“Earlier this week Dalton McGuinty had the chance to stand up, show strong leadership and send a message that no one is above the law. He didn’t do that and it’s time he did. Political leaders cannot and should not direct the police, but Ontarians expect their leaders to be leaders. That means sending a strong message that there is one law for everyone and showing leadership to do everything to ensure that the law is respected. That includes using the courts and other available avenues to discourage and prevent unlawful activity and to punish those who break the law.”
