Statement by New Democrat Leader Jack Layton on the election of new Assembly of First Nations’ next National Chief

New Democrats across the country today congratulate Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo on being elected the Assembly of First Nations’ next National Chief.The AFN is a critical and important voice in Canada. Under outgoing leader Phil Fontaine, the AFN led the call for the historic residential schools apology, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, for Canada to support UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, as well as a better standard of living for First Nations communities.

New Democrats are unwavering supporters of the rights of First Nations. We look forward to working with Chief Atleo and the AFN to address the pressing concerns of aboriginal people across Canada.
