Statement By The Honourable James Moore, Minister Of Canadian Heritage And Official Languages, On The Occasion Of The 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards
OTTAWA, ONTARIO – Sept. 21, 2009 – Music is a vital part of any culture. Canada’s vibrant music industry has its roots in our rich and varied heritage, while reflecting what today’s generation wants to hear. The Western Canadian Music Awards-Western Canada’s largest music festival and awards ceremony-honour the outstanding achievement of Western Canadian recording artists and industry talent. At this year’s event in Brandon, Manitoba, more than 30 music awards were handed out to recognize musical achievement in categories ranging from Aboriginal, blues, and classical to rock, pop, and hip hop.
Our Government recognizes the importance of the music industry in Canada, and we are pleased to invest in programs that support its development and growth. The recent renewal of the Canada Music Fund for a five-year period will provide long-term stability for the sector. It will also ensure that a wide variety of Canadian music is accessible on multiple platforms and will increase the popularity of Canadian artists at home and abroad.
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I commend the Western Canadian Music Awards on recognizing excellence in Canada’s musical talent from Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and the North. Congratulations to this year’s nominees and award winners: you have not only created music for the appreciative audiences of today, but have also provided inspiration for young up-and-coming musicians in the West for years to come.
