OTTAWA – On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada, our Parliamentary caucus and our Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission, I wish to congratulate Shawn Atleo on his election as National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations. I would also like to commend all the candidates who participated in this week’s elections at the 30th annual gathering of the AFN in Calgary. The First Nations’ voice is an important part of the Canadian mosaic, and the Assembly of First Nations plays a key role in making that voice heard. Their part in opening the lines of communication is pivotal, and I commend their proactive and meaningful dialogue that helps to engage Canadians across the country as we all work together to improve the lives of First Nations people.

The Liberal Party of Canada and Canada’s First Nations communities have a tradition of relationships based on partnership and respect, rooted in economic self-reliance. I stand committed to an open and meaningful relationship with the new National Chief to address some of the major issues facing First Nations peoples.

I also send out my very best wishes to outgoing National Chief, Phil Fontaine, who decided not to run again after an unprecedented three terms. Although he is stepping down from the AFN, his dedication to the advancement and self-determination of indigenous people in Canada and around the world will not end here.
