Steelworkers Celebrate International Women’s Day
February 27, 2015
TORONTO – Unions need women and women need unions. The United Steelworkers celebrates International Women’s Day by honouring women’s achievements and continuing our fight for change.
“In honour of International Women’s Day, I’m proud to recognize women’s achievements in the struggle for equality in Canada,” said Marty Warren, USW District 6 Director (Ontario and Atlantic Canada).
Unions are already a big equalizer for women in the workplace. Unions help negotiate better wages and working conditions and narrow the wage gap that still persists between women and men. Women in unions make 84% of their male counterparts, compared to only 70.6% in non-union workplaces.
“We know we have a lot more to do to achieve fairness and equality for women and to end violence against women,” said Warren.
“We’re proud of Women of Steel, an initiative in our union that empowers women, brings women together, builds leadership and tackles women’s issues in our workplaces and in our union,” said Warren. “Through Women of Steel, the USW is working to end violence against women.”
Steelworkers are active on a number of women’s issues and campaigns including:
- Joining the call for an inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women and girls
- Participating in the first-ever academic survey researching workers’ experiences of domestic violence in the workplace
- Organizing for our USW National Women of Steel Conference in Vancouver in November
- Participating in the Rethink Child Care campaign
- Taking part in #notokay, a campaign to stand up and call out actions in our culture, online and in our workplaces that belittle, sexualize or attack women
Each year, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. The first International Women’s Day was held in 1911. Thousands of events occur to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. The United Steelworkers is proud to mark International Women’s Day at events and mobilizations across the country.
