Northwestel is giving post-secondary students across the North the chance to win one of its Northern Futures Scholarships. As in past years, each successful recipient will receive a scholarship of $4000.00 to assist with post-secondary studies during the 2013/14 academic year.

The deadline to apply for the annual Northern Futures Scholarships is July 31st, 2013.

This year, Northwestel will provide six scholarships to northern residents across its operating area. The awards are given to students attending post secondary education in Commerce/Business, Engineering, Electrical/Telecommunications or Computer Sciences. Priority for three of the awards will go to Aboriginal students.

In addition to the award, each winner will be presented with a letter of offer guaranteeing them a position at Northwestel for the upcoming summer. Several past winners have found permanent employment with Northwestel after completing their academic program.

“Supporting yourself throughout your studies requires a sizeable financial commitment,” said Northwestel President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Flaherty. “Northwestel is committed to supporting northern students by reducing this financial impact and by allowing them to focus on their education. We hope that these scholarships help build the relationships and skills these students will need to become an active part of this organization after their studies.”

Since the program’s inception in 2002, 109 scholarships have been awarded, representing a total of $281,500 in contributions to outstanding northern students.

Applicants are required to submit a completed application form, official transcripts, proof of northern residency, a copy of their acceptance letter and proof of ancestry if they choose to be considered for one of the scholarships designated for Aboriginal students. In addition, a letter of introduction in either an essay or a video format is required.

More information, eligibility criteria and application forms are available in the Employment section of Northwestel’s website atwww.nwtel.ca. Inquiries can also be directed to scholarships@nwtel.ca.
