Innu Business Development Centre services benefit Innu businesses and entrepreneurs

March 13, 2018 – Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Investing in community-based business development organizations ensures that rural and urban business owners have access to the information and counselling needed to help them strengthen and expand their businesses and create new jobs. That’s why the Government of Canada is investing more than $736,000 in the Innu Business Development Centre (IBDC) to enable the Centre to continue providing business services to its members in the communities of Sheshatshiu and Natuashish and throughout the province.

Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), announced the funding from ACOA’s Business Development Program (BDP) today.

The funding will allow operations to continue through March 2020 to support new business development, existing businesses, and community capacity building. Project activities include consultant advisory services that help businesses develop business plans, identifying training needs and opportunities, developing a monitoring system to measure economic benefits of Innu companies, and implementing marketing initiatives to promote IBDC services and Innu companies.

This investment builds on the Government of Canada’s and the four Atlantic Provinces’ commitment to drive economic growth in Atlantic Canada through the Atlantic Growth Strategy. This Strategy involves targeted actions to stimulate Atlantic Canada’s economy, including supporting strategic projects and organizations that provide entrepreneurs with the tools they need to create and grow successful businesses.

“The Government of Canada is pleased to continue supporting the vitality and growth of Indigenous communities and businesses in Labrador and throughout our country. This investment in the Innu Business Development Centre will continue to build capacity within the Innu communities of Sheshatshiu and Natuashish to promote entrepreneurship and Innu owned businesses.”

  • The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA

“The Innu Business Development Centre has fostered business development for the Innu of Labrador for years, so I’m happy to see its valuable work continue. It combines a network of business service providers and partners with best business practices, and uses that knowledge to counsel, train and educate established and aspiring Innu business owners so they can operate effectively in their communities and region.”

  • Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador

“The Innu Business Development Centre is dedicated to providing business opportunities and support to Innu businesses. The Innu Business Development Centre assists Innu business founders by facilitating business development and access to economic opportunity. Innu Nation is pleased that the Government of Canada has recognized and supported the IBDC through the Atlantic Growth Strategy and looks forward to increased capacity-building through this program for Innu entrepreneurs.”
