Supporting Economic Development in Sioux Lookout

Ontario Strengthening Northwestern Economy, Creating Jobs
Ontario is supporting economic development in Northwestern Ontario by investing in projects that will help communities prepare for growth, companies to expand their operations, and create jobs.
The province’s Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is investing more than $2.5 million in nine projects across Northwestern Ontario.
Sioux Lookout is receiving $657,004 for the realignment of Wellington Street at Fifth Avenue to support new commercial development lots in the area, creating 15 construction jobs. The community is also receiving $50,000 to study the creation of a Regional Distribution Centre to meet supply needs of its Far North customers and another $50,000 to develop a five-year economic development strategy for the community.
In addition, the province is investing in six other projects:
- Fenwick Chipping in Dryden received $510,068 for the expansion of its fibre chipping operation, creating 10 jobs,
- Nelson Granite in Vermilion Bay received $500,500 to improve their equipment and infrastructure, creating three jobs,
- Kasabonika Lake First Nation is receiving $475,386 for Phase 2 of its small business centre, including construction of additional space, creating four jobs,
- Makoose Wood Innovations in Wabauskang First Nation received $159,600 to expand their sawmill operation, creating seven jobs,
- Slate Falls First Nation is receiving $100,073 to complete the construction of the community’s multi-purpose centre, creating four jobs,
- Nibinamik First Nation is receiving $37,260 to study the feasibility of building a small business multi-use centre in the community.
Investing in economic development and private-sector job creation is part of the government’s economic plan for Ontario. The four part plan is building Ontario up by investing in people’s talents and skills, building new public infrastructure like roads and transit, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives and building a secure savings plan so everyone can afford to retire.
- Since 2003, the NOHFC has invested almost $1 billion in 6,570 projects in Northern Ontario, creating or sustaining more than 25,100 jobs.
- In the Kenora-Rainy River region, the NOHFC has invested $108 million in 533 projects, creating or sustaining more than 2,800 jobs since 2003.
- The NOHFC’s investments in economic development are an important part of the Ontario government’s Growth Plan for Northern Ontario. A strong northern economy will give the people of Ontario more opportunities for jobs and economic prosperity.
