Synonym Art Consultation and Manitoba Music Team Up for Wall-To-Wall Mural + Culture Festival
Manitoba Music is teaming up with Synonym Art Consultation to shine a spotlight on live music during the 2017 Wall-To-Wall Mural + Culture Festival. The third edition of festival brings together music, visual art, and multimedia throughout the month of September, all of which collide at the Winnipeg Centre Vineyard for Nuit Blanche on September 30.
Electronic pop artist Selci will kick this year’s festivities off on September 1 at The Tallest Poppy for First Fridays, with DJ ANDY_2_K and hosted by Kenneth and The OB, and art by Kate Vermette. Download Selci’s track “electric circus”
On September 15, Wall-To-Wall takes over three floors of the Forth Projects building on McDermot Ave for an epic event that includes a live performance from RnB singer/songwriter Marisolle Negash, a performance by dancer/choreographer Ming Hon, plus the turntable stylings of DJs Louie Lovebird and Super Shonek.
Vancouver-based DJ and filmmaker Cheyanna Kootenhayoo, aka DJ Kookum, will make her way to Winnipeg for a special workshop at Studio 393 on September 21. Free to youth 12-28, the workshop is in partnership with the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s exhibition, insurgence/resurgence.
The festival closes with two finales on Nuit Blanche, a free all-night exploration and celebration of contemporary art that takes place on the Saturday of the Culture Days weekend from dusk to dawn.
The Winnipeg Centre Vineyard at 782 Main Street will once again host the free outdoor celebration from 4-10PM. Free and open to the public, the MB Live Main Stage features a stellar lineup of live music, including jazz hip hop act Super Duty Tough Work, who will share some new collaborative work with the young talent of Studio 393, the Graffiti Art Programming Inc.’s youth-led hip hop arts studio. The two outfits have been working together in Synonym’s new mentorship program, which has offered over a month of free multidisciplinary hip hop-focused workshops to youth, including a music business workshop with Manitoba Music. Emerging indie pop phenom Faouzia will also perform while acclaimed Ontario-based DJ Shub will close the show. A collaborative art project will be created during the event, which also launches the annual Rainbow Trout Music Festival Bike Jam. The celebration makes it way to Public Safety Building site for a free outdoor party featured interactive art and DJs AOKS, Rhayne Vermette, and Boogey the Beat.
Launched in 2014 by local arts initiative Synonym Art Consultation, Wall-To-Wall is a mural and culture festival that takes place in Winnipeg every year at the end of September. It sees the creation of multiple indoor and outdoor murals across the city and celebrates each new work of art with unique events. The festival culminates with a huge block party that coincides with Nuit Blanche, bringing together diverse communities around art, music, dance, and more. This year Wall-to-Wall is in full partnership with Graffiti Art Programming and North End Community Renewal Corporation.
