Tahltan Welcome Federal Funding for Proposed Northwest Transmission Line
Vancouver, September 16, 2009 – The Tahltan Central Council (TCC) welcomes today’s announcement from Prime Minister Harper, Minister Baird and the federal government of up to $130 million toward construction of the proposed Northwest Transmission Line.“We applaud the Prime Minister for stepping up and committing federal funds,” says Annita McPhee, Chair, Tahltan Central Council.
The Northwest Transmission Line has the potential to significantly impact the Tahltan Nation and its members. A large portion of the line runs through Tahltan Traditional Territory and would act as a gateway for new activities and development that could have impacts on Tahltan Title and Rights. “We are not opposed to development,” said Ms. McPhee, “but it needs to take place in a manner that respects Tahltan title and rights.”
“We look forward to meeting with the federal government to discuss how we will work together on the review of the NTL, including gathering information on both impacts and benefits”, says McPhee.
“The Transmission Line is an important decision for our people and our way of life. It is essential that the federal government engages with the Tahltan people and ensures adequate consultation will take place to allow our people to make informed decisions,” says McPhee.
