Knock it down. That’s what the jury in a coroner’s inquest wants done to the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre.

Or in the more polite wording of the jury’s recommendation, the province should replace the trouble jail with “a new, modern facility designed to adequately accommodate, with dignity, the inmate population.”

That was the first and arguably most important of the 80 recommendations made by the jury, its final act before the inquest – which kicked off Feb. 24 – concluded Monday.

“I’m excited by them,” lawyer Kevin Egan said of the long list of changes called for by the jury. Egan, who represented the families of Floyd Deleary, Justin Thompson and Murray James David, commended the jury’s five jurors. “They made sound, practical, reasonable recommendations,” Egan said.

“I’m hoping that this is somewhat cathartic for them,” he said of the family members he represented. “Nothing’s going to bring back their loved ones.”

The three inmates died of “opiate toxicity” in separate incidents dating back to 2015.
