Treaty One Territory, MB – Today is National Child Day. It is a day to recognize the importance of children as our future. The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs strives to honour, protect, and promote the rights of First Nations children through a number of initiatives including:
- Bringing Our Children Home Act, a Manitoba-specific federal legislation on children and families
- The development of templates for traditional laws on First Nations child and family wellness
- Reunification of children and families through the First Nations Family Advocate Office
- Ensuring a clear link is recognized between the child welfare system and missing and murdered Indigenous women at the National Inquiry for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls
- Providing services to families through our EAGLE Urban Transition Centre
- Administering the Jordan’s Principle Initiative for First Nations children and youth in Manitoba
“Children are the most important members of our communities, our teachings tell us that they are the closest to the Creator and they are sacred,” said Grand Chief Arlen Dumas.“On National Child Day and every day, it’s important for us to remember that we are borrowing this land from our children. Through the advocacy work we do at the AMC, we aim to create a better, brighter future for all First Nations children.”
As part of National Child Day, the First Nations Family Advocate Office is hosting a self-advocacy workshop for parents and caregivers today.
