Canada’s international transactions in securities, October 2017
Foreign investment in Canadian securities totalled $20.8 billion in October, led by record acquisitions of Canadian bonds. At the same time, Canadian investors increased their holdings of foreign securities by $16.5 billion, mainly purchases of US shares.
Study: Experimental Estimates of Cannabis Consumption in Canada, 1960 to 2015
On April 13, 2017, the Government of Canada tabled legislation in the House of Commons to legalize, regulate and restrict access to cannabis for non-medical purposes. In preparation for these changes, it is necessary to adjust Canada’s national statistical system to measure the economic and social impacts of legalized cannabis.
Industrial research and development characteristics, 2015 (actual), 2016 (preliminary) and 2017 (intentions)
In-house industrial research and development expenditures declined 5.8%, from $18.2 billion in 2014 to $17.2 billion in 2015.
Annual wholesale trade, 2016
The operating revenue of Canadian wholesalers declined 1.4% in 2016 compared with 2015, dropping further below the $1.0 trillion mark reached in 2014. The overall drop was partly caused by a price-induced decline in the petroleum products subsector, as all other subsectors saw increases in revenues. Excluding petroleum, operating revenues rose 3.1% compared with 2015.
Pipeline transportation of oil and other liquid petroleum products, October 2017
Pipelines received 21.1 million cubic metres of crude oil and equivalent products from Canadian fields and plants in October, up 1.8% compared with the same month in 2016. The vast majority originated in Alberta (85.8%), followed by Saskatchewan (11.0%).
Aircraft movement statistics: Major airports, October 2017
There were 479,630 aircraft take-offs and landings at the 91 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in October, compared with 444,800 movements in October 2016.
Monthly civil aviation statistics, October 2017
The six Canadian Level I air carriers flew 6.3 million passengers on scheduled and charter services in October, up 7.5% from October 2016.
Dairy statistics, October 2017
During the first 10 months of 2017, total cheese production (the sum of cheddar and specialty cheeses) rose 3.2% from the same period in 2016 to 391 842 tonnes. However, production of both cheddar and specialty cheeses declined year over year in October, with cheddar cheese down 4.8% to 13 576 tonnes and specialty cheese down 5.3% to 29 103 tonnes.
