Canada’s balance of international payments, fourth quarter 2019
Canada’s current account deficit (on a seasonally adjusted basis) narrowed by $2.1 billion in the fourth quarter to $8.8 billion. The decrease mainly reflected a lower trade in goods deficit, as well as higher receipts from government transfers.
Non-residential capital and repair expenditures, 2018 (revised), 2019 (preliminary) and 2020 (intentions)
Capital expenditures on non-residential construction and machinery and equipment are expected to rise 2.8% to $275.5 billion in 2020, following a 1.7% increase in 2019 and a 9.8% increase in 2018.
Payroll employment, earnings and hours, December 2019
The average weekly earnings of non-farm payroll employees were $1,042 in December, little changed from November. On a year-over-year basis, earnings grew 3.4%, the effect of an increase observed from March to October.
Performing arts, 2018
Following the publicity of Canada 150—both domestically and abroad—the performing arts industry saw a larger increase in operating revenues from 2016 to 2018 than what was observed in previous years. Total operating revenues reached $2.4 billion in 2018, up 11.3% from 2016. Operating expenses increased 10.9% to $2.1 billion, resulting in an operating profit margin of 12.8%.
Accommodation services, 2018
The accommodation services subsector reached $22.5 billion in operating revenue in 2018, up 4.5% from 2017. Ontario accounted for the largest share of revenue (29.5%), followed by British Columbia (21.3%), Alberta (19.0%) and Quebec (15.6%).
Monthly civil aviation statistics, December 2019
The six Canadian Level I air carriers flew 7.2 million passengers on scheduled and charter services in December, up 3.5% from December 2018. This marks the second year-over-year monthly increase after four consecutive declines. There was a 0.9% increase in November 2019.
Aircraft movement statistics: Major airports, December 2019
Aircraft take-offs and landings at Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations decreased 4.0% in December. Combined, 90 airports reported 371,561 movements, compared with 91 airports totalling 387,152 movements in December 2018.
