OTTAWA, August 1, 2008 – British Columbia residents and visitors from across Canada will be able to participate in the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the colony of British Columbia, thanks to funding from the Government of Canada.
The Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced financial assistance for the BC150 Secretariat. The funding of $6.6 million will be used to support activities commemorating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the colony of British Columbia that are taking place in the province during 2008.

I invite Canadians throughout the country to participate in the activities planned and to celebrate this historic moment for the province and our entire country.”
“I want to thank Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada for contributing to the BC150 celebration and for working with us on many projects that are building strong communities, a strong province, and a strong Canada,” said Premier Gordon Campbell. “On British Columbia’s 150th anniversary, we celebrate not only our province’s rich history but also the partnerships and achievements that have laid the foundation for a bright future – and particularly for the year 2010, when B.C. and Canada will host the world.”
“We are delighted that the Government of Canada has recognized British Columbia’s historical contributions by providing support for the province’s 150th anniversary celebrations,” said Bill Bennett, Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts. “B.C. has played an important role in the growth and development of our nation.
