The Government of Quebec Cannot Constantly Scorn the Territorial Rights of the First Nations, Ghislain Picard, Chief of the AFNQL
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wendake, June 4 2009 – The Chief of the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador, (AFNQL), Ghislain Picard, was invited today at Mont Ste-Anne to speak within the scope of the activity « The occupation of territories, an issue of society », a function organized by Solidarité rurale du Québec.Chief Picard took advantage of this forum, before many national organizations of the civil society, to remind the place of the First Nations, when the issue of territorial occupation is raised. « The open-mindedness demonstrated by the civil society of Quebec during these two days of discussions contrasts with the stubbornness of the Quebec government. The latter must realize that it cannot constantly scorn the territorial rights of the First Nations. This negative backward-looking attitude can only generate confrontation », explains Mr. Picard.
The Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador is the organization regrouping the Chiefs of the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador.
