First Nations doctor James Makokis from Alberta, Canada, identifies as “two-spirit” – a term used to identify indigenous LGBT+ people with both masculine and feminine traits – and has dedicated his career to supporting other “two-spirit” people, particularly transgender teenagers, many of whom feel their traditional acceptance in native communities has been lost.
