The Kativik Regional Government Elects a New Vice-chairman

PRESS RELEASE

Kuujjuaq, Québec – April 25th 2007 – The Kativik Regional Government (KRG) held a special regional council meeting yesterday, April 24th, where an election was held, for the positions of vice-chairperson, executive member, and KRG representative on the Kativik School Board. According to section 279 of An Act respecting Northern Villages and the Kativik Regional Government (R.S.Q. c. V-6.1) (the Kativik Act), any vacancy on the executive committee shall be filled within 30 days of the date on which it occurs. Consequently, following the resignation of Mr. Michael Gordon as vice-chairman of the KRG on March 31st 2007, Mr. Aisara Kenuajuak was elected as the new vice-chairman of the KRG, by virtue of resolution No. 2007-18.

Mr. Kenuajuak was already an executive member before being appointed to the position of vice-chairman, which meant that the executive committee only consisted of 4 members, instead of 5. According to section 276 of the Kativik Act, the executive committee shall consist of five members appointed by resolution of the council from among the councilors, including a vice-chairperson designated as such by the council. Therefore, an election was held and Mrs. Mary A. Pilurtuut, mayor of Kangiqsujuaq, was appointed to the executive committee, by virtue of resolution No. 2007-19.Before resigning, Mr. Michael Gordon was also the KRG representative appointed to the Kativik School Board council of commissioners and executive committee. Therefore a new representative, Mr. Eli Aullaluk mayor of Akulivik, was elected to this position by virtue of resolution No. 2007-20.

The Northern Village of Kuujjuaq also had to nominate one of their municipal councilors to replace Mr. Michael Gordon. Mr. Paul Parsons is now the Kuujjuaq representative sitting at the KRG regional council.

The appointments of Mr. Kenuajuak, Mrs. Pilurtuut and Mr. Eli Aullaluk are for a period of 7 months, until the next municipal elections will be held in November of 2007, at which time the council will meet again and appoint new members or re-appoint existing members to the executive committee and to represent the KRG on the boards of various Nunavik organizations.

The Kativik Regional Government (KRG) is a non-ethnic public organization created in 1978, under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, whose jurisdiction covers nearly the entire territory of Quebec north of the 55th parallel. The KRG administers the affairs of Nunavik in the areas of municipal affairs, transportation, environment, police, employment, manpower training, income security, childcare services, renewable resources, land-use management, civil security and economic development.
