The loss of an Indigenous family in a house fire was totally avoidable. When will governments step up? – Toronto Star

Again, we ask how many more lives will be lost before action is taken?
What is left in the aftermath of the deadly fire that stole the lives of Geraldine Chapman and her four children is pure devastation.
Chapman’s home burned to the ground late Thursday night in the northern Ontario community of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug, Big Trout, First Nation. Geraldine and her children and foster children, Angel, 12, Kyle, 9, Hailey, 7, Shyra, 6, all died in the blaze. Their deaths have affected everyone in the tight-knit community 600 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay.
The family’s deaths were needless, totally avoidable. But in Indigenous communities they happen again and again because Canada has yet to make the investments necessary to stop the deaths.
