The NAC invites students to experience the music of Canada’s North
April 23, 2013
Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra celebrates the vibrancy and richness of Canada’s northern culture in a special fun-filled student matinee performance on Wednesday, May 1 and Thursday, May 2.Adventures in Canada’s North, a co-production with the NAC’s Northern Scene, introduces students to this unique region – through story, throat singing and drum dancing.
The NAC Orchestra shares the stage with some of the North’s most dynamic artists. Akinisie Sivuarapik, Evie Mark, and the terrific duo Kulavak bring their extraordinary energy and skill to the traditional Inuit art of throat singing. Moira Cameron and David Serkoak bring stories to life through singing, drumming and dancing, and the contagious energy of accordion master Simeonie Keenainakwill get your toes tapping.
The matinee concerts feature two new works composed especially for the events and commissioned by the NAC:
- Northern Memories (Souvenirs Nordiques) composed by Principal Youth and Family Conductor Alain Trudel. Northern Memories is a suite of traditional songs and dances from Canada’s Far North. Says Maestro Trudel, “When I was directing the CBC Radio Orchestra in a concert celebrating the opening of the Iqaluit radio station, we had the opportunity to share the stage with Simeonie Keenainak. That encounter sealed forever my love for the folk music of the Far North, and many of the melodies that I have included in this modest suite stem from that great man’s interpretations.”
- Winter, Take 2 – Hillcrest Composed by the Senior Music class at Hillcrest High School in Ottawa, with the help of composer Tim Brady and throat singer Nancy Mike, this new work was inspired by the students’ own understanding of Inuit culture and by their own experiences with winter here in the Nation’s Capital. Enjoy the video the students created to capture the fun and chaos of winter, and their ambitious attempts to learn the art of Inuit throat singing.
