Winnipeg, MB, June 20, 2019 – The North West Company renewed its commitment and continuous support for the City of Winnipeg’s Indigenous Accord as a participant at the third annual signing ceremony this week at Winnipeg’s City Hall.

A year ago, The North West Company (North West) signed the Indigenous Accord and identified four goals to improve its reconciliation efforts which include generating business development opportunities for Indigenous people, working to preserve Indigenous languages, improving employment opportunities for Indigenous people, and jointly advocating with Indigenous communities on social and economic issues.

“As a retail business that serves, employs, and relies upon the support of Indigenous peoples, we have a responsibility to promote initiatives such as Winnipeg’s Indigenous Accord,” said Gary Merasty, Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer at The North West Company. “We are committed to building strong relationships with Indigenous peoples that are based on recognition of rights, respect, cooperation and partnership.”

As a partner to the Indigenous Accord, North West recently shared the progress it has made on its goals in the recently published Annual Partner Goals and Progress Report by the City of Winnipeg. North West’s progress includes: (1) supporting 51 ventures with community-based Indigenous entities in Canada and the United States;

  • the revitalization and preservation of the Indigenous languages through store shelf signage in 30 different Indigenous languages and dialects (3) launching a community training program and; (4) supporting healthy living initiatives for Northern youth through our Healthy Horizons Foundation which has raised $1 Million since its inception in 2015.
