The Second Annual Louis Riel Day Celebration: A Vancouver Festival of Métis Dance, Music and Culture

by NationTalk on November 10, 20071015 Views

Compaigni V’ni Dansi announces the second annual Louis Riel Day Celebration, a festival of Métis culture to be held November 15, 2007 at the East Cultural Centre in Vancouver.

Last year’s Celebration, held at the Norman Rothstein Theatre, was an exciting blend of traditional and contemporary Métis culture. This year’s program promises to be even bigger and better with dance performances by the Louis Riel Métis Dancers; music by Don Freed and Sandy Scofield, poetry by Joanne Arnott and a special excerpt from The Crossing, Compaigni V’ni Dansi’s contemporary piece on the Métis resistance told from the heart of the Métis people. The evening is in honour of Louis Riel who became an inspiration for the rebirth of the Métis nation. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the vitality of contemporary Métis culture. As they prepare for the second Celebration, Compaigni V’ni Dansi anticipates that this will become an annual event on the Vancouver cultural calendar and grow accordingly in the years ahead.

Yvonne Chartrand from Compaigni V’ni Dansi said: “The Celebration will feature a lively, exciting program, ranging from famous Métis fiddle music through to energetic dancing. It is an event that reflects our unique cultural heritage – a blending of French, Scottish, Irish, English, Scandinavian and First Nations. It is a celebration for the entire community of Vancouver. We are so pleased to be at the East Cultural Centre, right in the multicultural heart of the city.”

Compaigni V’ni Dansi is the only company in Canada dedicated to teaching and performing traditional and contemporary Métis dance, creating a unique form of expression. The company was created to share Métis stories and culture with Aboriginal and mainstream audiences with a special interest in passing our dances on to today’s youth. Our mission is to create a repertoire of work that reflects Métis culture. We also seek out contemporary dance and artistic collaborations that bring new light and understanding to these traditions.
