VICTORIA, BC – TimberWest is proud to present the opening of the TimberWest First Nation Cultural Art Showcase: Reclaimed Culture and Life for a free two-week public viewing period beginning October 5.
Featured on the ground floor of the Royal BC Museum, the two-week Showcase evolved from an immersive art experience held over the summer where the public enjoyed interacting with the featured artists, deepening their appreciation of cultural perspectives and personal heritage. During that time, the artists were joined by master carvers Tom LaFortune and Perry LaFortune of the Tsawout First Nation, marking the start of a public pole carving program the museum hosted in partnership with the BC Ministry of Health.
The artists featured in the TimberWest Showcase are: brothers Dave and Johnathan Jacobson of Tsaxis First Nation in Fort Rupert, Tom Hunt Jr. of Wei-Wai-Kum First Nationin Campbell River, Toni Frank of Shishalh First Nation in Sechelt, and the Good Familyfrom Snuneymux First Nation in Nanaimo. Their works are representative of the kwakwaka’wakw and Coast Salish Indigenous language groups.
“We are pleased to shine a spotlight on these remarkable artists and provide the public with a viewing experience that will tell a story about Vancouver Island’s First Nation culture. It is a distinct privilege to have this opportunity to showcase the selected artists’ work and share it broadly with the public,” says Jeff Zweig, President and CEO of TimberWest.
“The Royal BC Museum, as a venue for the TimberWest First Nation Cultural Art Showcase, allows the public to interact, engage and learn from the artists in manner that allows for open discussion and reflection,” says Professor Jack Lohman, Royal BC Museum CEO.
