Timmins To Host Mine Reclamation Conference
May 2, 2016
Registration is now open for the CLRA National Annual General Meeting and Conference, to be held on June 26-29, 2016 at the McIntyre Coffee Shop and Arena in Timmins. Please note that the early bird rate is offered only until May 13, 2016.
The OMA is proud to partner with the Canadian Land Reclamation Association for the ninth year in a row on an event dedicated to a critical aspect of mining: the process of restoring land that has been mined to a natural state, or re-purposing it for other beneficial uses (learn more). With more than 100 years of mining history, prolific production in gold, copper and zinc, and its future role as one of the access hubs for the ‘Ring of Fire’, Timmins is an ideal location to host a conversation about reclamation best practices.
The 2016 conference will examine various accomplishments achieved in the field of reclamation, and showcase the history, challenges and successes particular to the Timmins/Porcupine mining camp. The conference will include two days of technical presentations and posters, short courses, a trade show, and local field trips. Click here for the itinerary and list of speakers, as well as venues, hotels and contacts.
Note that, while the June 26 field trip will focus on Mining and Reclamation in Northeastern Ontario, participants will have an opportunity to learn first-hand about Timmins Mine Reclamation on June 29. The program will also include a banquet, featuring the presentation of the Tom Peters Mine Reclamation Award. There are two components to this environmental award: recognition for a company doing outstanding work in mine reclamation, and a $5,000 bursary (funded by Vale) for a university graduate student, who will deliver a presentation on his/her research topic at the conference.
The OMA and CLRA have held mine reclamation conferences in a variety of communities across Ontario, including Kirkland Lake (2008), Timmins (2009), Elliot Lake (2010), Sudbury (2011), Thunder Bay (2012), Cobalt (2013), Peterborough (2014) and Marathon (2015) – click here to learn more about past events. Our aim is to encourage the pursuit of excellence in mine reclamation, as well as share knowledge, information, research results and best practices. Moreover, we wish to promote a better understanding of the outstanding achievements in mine reclamation to Ontario’s mining industry, the environmental community and the broader public.
While we take pride in our world-leading environmental performance, we are constantly striving to better ourselves, our techniques, and our processes. There is much to be learned from past reclamation efforts, as well as current breakthrough practices and research.
