WHITEHORSE—Two new financial awards in the amounts of $5000 and $8000 are available to Yukon College students entering full time courses in September.

1) The CICan Paul and Gerri Charette Bursary Program will award ten bursaries of up to $5000 each with preference given to students attending colleges or institutes in rural, remote, or northern areas.

Applicants must apply directly to Yukon College which will then review all submissions and select one application to submit to Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) by the deadline of Tuesday September 10. If successful, the award will be disbursed across two terms, $2500 in the fall term and $2500 in the winter term.

Applicants must:

  • be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant, permanent resident or a protected person;
  • be enrolled full time in the first year of a two or three-year program;
  • be in financial need.

Applications must include:

  • an endorsement letter signed by the president of Yukon College highlighting the financial need of the student;
  • an essay (max 1000 words) by the student describing the impact the bursary will have on the student’s ability to attend Yukon College and the student’s involvement in their community;
  • two letters of support from community leaders or teachers/instructors.

2) Established by an anonymous donor to mark his 50th anniversary in Canada, the VK to C in 50 Scholarship is available to a student beginning their studies in an undergraduate degree program at Yukon College. The successful applicant will receive $2000 and is able to renew the award up to three times, to a maximum of $8000, as long as they continue to demonstrate financial need and remain registered in their program on a full-time basis in good academic standing. The deadline to apply for this award is September 30.

Applicants must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • be accepted for the first time into one of the following programs at Yukon College in Fall 2019: Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Governance; Bachelor of Business Administration; Bachelor of Science in Northern Environmental and Conservation Studies; Bachelor of Social Work; Bachelor of Education; Bachelor of Education After Degree
  • be registered full-time at Yukon College
  • remain in good academic standing throughout the program
  • demonstrate financial need

Arriving here as a refugee, the donor benefited from Canada’s educational system and went on to become a world-class nation builder. Turning to philanthropy in his retirement, he has offered scholarships in every province and territory to mark this special occasion, and to thank Canada for the opportunities it has afforded him. VK is Velke Kapusany, Slovakia, the donor’s birthplace, while C signifies Canada. The Ottawa Community Foundation has facilitated this act of generosity from coast to coast to coast.

To apply students must complete the Student Financial Award Application Form, Student Financial Award Application Waiver Form and Budget Sheet.
