U of Guelph: 2018 Graduates to Be Honoured at Spring Convocation Ceremonies

The next generation of leaders in disciplines ranging from engineering to business and fine art to biology will cross the spring convocation stage at the University of Guelph next week.

In all, 3,500 students will graduate during 10 ceremonies to take place June 12-14.

Students and faculty will also be joined by honorary degree recipients, as follows:

  • Larry McDermott, Indigenous Elder from Shabot Obaadjiwan Algonquin First Nation, who has promoted social justice and environmental protection
  • Nihar Biswas, whose clean water technology has improved people’s lives worldwide
  • Jim Estill, CEO of Danby Products Ltd., who shares his passion for business and philanthropy
  • Emmanuelle Gattuso, television producer and communications entrepreneur who has raised millions for cancer treatment and research as well as U of G’s Ontario Veterinary College Pet Trust program
  • John Schram, former senior diplomat, teacher, lawyer, activist and scholar who has advanced peaceful change and positive development in representing Canada in Africa
  • Thomas Silhavy, leading bacterial geneticist who has made essential contributions to the understanding of bacterial growth and behaviour;
  • Paul Singh, distinguished emeritus professor of food engineering at the University of California, Davis, who has contributed to food science and engineering
  • Donald Ziraldo, founding father of Canada’s grape and wine industry and co-founder of Iniskillin Wines
  • Barb Minett and Doug Minett, co-founders of The Bookshelf bookstore, a Guelph community resource that has become a hub of literature, films and ideas.

Several U of G faculty members and students will also receive awards for teaching, service and academic excellence.

Ceremonies this year will take place at the Guelph Gryphons Event Centre.

Thousands of family and friends from around the world are expected to attend the U of G ceremonies, which will also be broadcast live and available on the convocation website.

Immediately following each ceremony, college deans will hold receptions for grads and guests, faculty and staff in Rozanski Hall.
