On Friday, September 13th, 2019, the University of Sudbury organized a Welcome Fire at its Nishnaabe-gkendaaswin Teg Indigenous arbour to begin this new academic year. The day began around 7:15 a.m. with the lighting of the fire and a morning ceremony. At 1:30 p.m., a welcoming presentation was held, which was weaved with Indigenous teachings. During the presentation, Father Meehan spoke to the university community for the first time, as new President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sudbury, sharing his wishes for this new academic year. We also welcomed Tasha Beeds, the newest Faculty member within the Department of Indigenous Studies, and other new members on campus.

Despite the rainy weather, spirits were not dampened during this fraternal and even poignant celebration of sharing that lit sparks within the students and employees that were present, thus beginning the year on the right foot.

Thank you to all those that were involved, including Will Morin who played a big role in the ceremonies, the teachings and the execution of the day. We wish you all an excellent 2019-2020 academic year!
