During his time as head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Justice Murray Sinclair led the collection of statements from close to 7,000 survivors of the residential school school system, describing the mental, physical, and sexual abuse they had suffered.
Close to two months since the commission released its myriad findings and calls to action to the public, Sinclair says his work is far from over.
“I think there’s probably a lot of work that still remains to be done in the area of addressing the relationship between aboriginal people and the government and the churches, and non-aboriginal people around the country, and also helping non-aboriginal people come to terms with what their government has done in the past,” Sinclair said, speaking to the Sault Star from Ottawa ahead of his trip to Sault Ste. Marie, where he’ll be delivering a keynote address at the fourth annual Shingwauk Gathering and Conference at Algoma University.
