University of Sudbury Writing Contest Celebrates Indigenous Youth

by ahnationtalk on April 3, 2019126 Views

During the University of Sudbury’s annual Awards Ceremony on March 28, 2019, two local Indigenous youth were recognized for their contributions to the University of Sudbury’s youth publication contest, Indigenous Me.

Ruby Sage-Wolfe is this year’s Top Writer in the grade 7-9 category for her play “The Wings that Define Us”. Ruby is an 8th grade student at MacLeod Public School in Sudbury. Her play was inspired by her grandmother’s experience in residential school. Through powerful symbolism, the play tells the story of Indigenous resilience despite the trauma of colonization.

Katiya Gareau-Jones is this year’s Top Writer in the grade 10-12 category for her poem “L’aperçu d’une jeune fille autochtone”. Katiya is an 11th grade student at École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur in Sudbury. Her poem is a self-reflection of her journey to self-acceptance and her experiences as an Indigenous girl.

The Indigenous Me publication contest was created as an opportunity for Indigenous youth to share their stories and celebrate cultural pride. The University of Sudbury asked Indigenous youth grades 7 to 12 to submit a creative writing piece related to the theme “What being Indigenous means to me”. Submissions took many forms; poetry, essays, a play and more. Students wrote about traditions, teachings and experiences from a variety of perspectives. A digital copy of the publication is now available to view on the University website, by clicking HERE.

Thank you to our contest’s sponsors, who have helped make this new initiative possible: Anishinabek Nation, Rainbow District School Board, Wiikwemkoong First Nation and Ojibwe Cultural Foundation. Congratulations again to the contest winners and thank you to everyone who took part in this new initiative!
