Update – Nishnawbe-Aski Police Investigate School Fire in Sandy Lake

(Sandy Lake, ON) On February 19, 2012, at 12:27 p.m., the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service began an investigation into a fire which caused extensive damage at the Thomas Fiddler Memorial School located in Sandy Lake First Nation.

On February 29, 2012, Nishnawbe-Aski Police Sandy Lake Detachment members identified a youth in relation to the arson at the school and two charges have subsequently been laid.A thirteen (13) year-old male youth has been charged for Break, Enter and Commit and Arson to the Thomas Fiddler Memorial School. The youth, who cannot be identified under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was released on conditions and will next appear in court on April 17, 2012, in Sandy Lake, Ontario.

The school will be closed for the remainder of the school year as the overall damage is extensive.

Sandy Lake First Nation is located approximately 600 km northwest of Thunder Bay.
