On May 7, Mount Carmel students organized a rally in support of the struggle against Nalcor’s mega-dam project in Labrador.
If the mega-dam goes on-line in 2020, Innu, Inuit and non-Indigenous people downstream face the threat of methylmercury poisoning, death via dam break and cultural genocide, protesters contend.
While the Labrador Land Protectors were rallying and engaging in civil disobedience on Parliament Hill, Mount Carmel students were raising awareness on Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation’s land with a local walk and symbolic die-in calling attention to the colonial government’s ongoing racism and violence.
Throughout the walk, there were several stops committed to raising awareness linked to cultural genocide, government hypocrisy, criminalization of dissent and Indigenous rights enshrined in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (which the Trudeau government claims to support).
