The Walrus Foundation and Vancouver Island University (VIU) are pleased to announce a special event exploring how our ideas and choices can shape the future of culture, reconciliation, economic development, and more.

Tickets are now on sale for Vancouver Island University Presents The Walrus Talks Leadership. The event takes place on Tuesday, March 13 starting at 7 pm in VIU’s Malaspina Theatre (Building 310) on the Nanaimo Campus.

“We are pleased to host The Walrus Talks – an internationally recognized series of talks that seek to inspire and promote important conversations about issues that affect the future of our communities and the nation,” says Dr. Ralph Nilson, VIU President and Vice-Chancellor. “Speakers will be addressing a range of important topics, from fostering leadership skills, to globalization, to reconciliation between Canada’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. We believe it is the responsibility of universities to foster and encourage dialogue on these important issues facing our country.”

The Walrus Talks format features seven speakers for seven minutes each on topics related to a single theme. This event will feature a lineup of thoughtful, inspiring presentations from young and established business leaders, academics, politicians, and more.
Speakers are:

  • Ruby Barclay, peer support navigator for the Tuition Waiver Program, Vancouver Island University
  • Stephen Kakfwi, former Northwest Territories premier and former Dene Nation president
  • Alicia Raimundo, a mental health and youth engagement advocate
  • Katharina Rout, translator and honorary research associate, Vancouver Island University
