Volunteers wade into Mattagami River for ice rescue training – Timmins Daily Press

MATTAGAMI FIRST NATION – Firefighters with the Mattagami First Nation Fire Department did something counter-intuitive last Wednesday.

They walked on the ice, and went into the Mattagami River, during spring break-up.

Fire Chief Wilbert Wesley said, “It’s ingrained into us not to do that.

“Everyone, from the time they’re a child, when they start walking, they’re always told by their parents or their guardians, don’t play on the ice – especially on break-up.”

But the volunteers did so under supervision, and with the correct equipment, as part of a training exercise. Wesley said the First Nation sees two or three incidents a year on the water, involving humans, pets, or motorists.
