April 7, 2008 (Montreal): RTS CANADA announced today its participation as project manager in the reconstruction of CHPH 99.7 FM, Wemindji, Quebec, upgrading the directional ERP signal up to 14,000 watts to reach over 125 kilometres of the James Bay territory. As well, new studios will be added. The station was first licensed by the CRTC three years ago.
CHPH/FM is owned by the non-profit Wemindji Telecommunications Association. RTS CANADA has been instrumental over the years in training staff, designing the facilities and engineering licensing. It has also provided consulting to other community-owned facilities in Wemindji including Creenet, the local cable TV and Internet broadband service. Last year, the CHPH/FM decided to expand operations so that listeners could hear its programming across the vast hunting and trapping territory of the Cree Nation of Wemindji. Wemindji is currently undergoing a construction boom with a new Council office, Youth Centre, community auditorium and health centre. Photos are available on Google Earth. “Our community is growing quickly,” noted CHPH/FM vice president Edward Georgekish, “and it is important that the station grow too.”
RTS Canada is currently accepting tenders for a new 200ft. guyed tower, transmission hardware as well as an STL to link its remote antenna site with the studio. For more information, e-mail email@example.com.
“We are very proud of our long association with the community,” said RTS CANADA president Hyman Glustein. “It is an important part of the James Bay territory, being the first Internet service north of Val d’Or and the first radio service to actively engage outside advertisers. We take pride in being associated with innovators and our commitment to community radio everywhere in Canada goes back over 35 years”
