Wild Animal Park has been renamed to honour the heritage and culture of Indigenous People who once lived on the land.

On Monday, Moose Jaw City Council approved the park’s name change to Tatawâw Park, meaning there’s room for everyone in Cree.

The name was prosed to a city sub-committee in December by a group of individuals in the community who wanted to use this as a first step toward reconciliation in Moose Jaw.

“I see the renaming of the Wild Animal Park as a true land acknowledgement, and as an ultimate action of reconciliation. It’s not just words we speak, but an action from the heart in acknowledging the original inhabitants of the land,” Lori Deets, chair of the Wakamow Aboriginal Community Association told the Daily Jaw in December.
