Young Fond du Lac homicide victim laid to rest – The Battlefords News-Optimist

The small northern Saskatchewan Dene First Nation community in Fond du Lac laid a young homicide victim to rest Saturday at Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Church.
Community members honoured 18-year-old Skyler (Smith) Fern – who had a passion for hockey – by hanging jerseys in their windows. And when Fern’s body was brought back home in a casket, residents wearing hockey jerseys lined both sides of the street tapping their hockey sticks in unison on the road as the procession, led by an RCMP vehicle, slowly made its way down the street April 22.
Fern’s murder has shaken the tiny tight-knit community.
RCMP found Fern injured at a residence in Fond du Lac on April 18 after they received a report at about 6 a.m. of an altercation between several people at a residence. When police arrived, they found Fern and a 19-year-old woman injured. RCMP officers took them to the Denesuline Health Centre where Fern was pronounced deceased. The woman was treated and later released.
